My mega menu doesn't open

A mega menu is the wide panel with products or collection cards that opens from a link in the header. It comes from a Mega menu block in the Header section, and the block finds its link by title. The block's Menu item must be the title of a top-level link in the header's menu, and that link must have nested links under it.

Rule out the cache and the wrong theme

If your other recent changes don't show on your store either, start with My changes don't show on my store. The links themselves come from the menu in your Shopify admin, not from the theme. What the theme controls and what Shopify controls explains the difference.

This is the most likely cause. Each Checkmate style comes with a Mega menu block set to a link from its demo store, such as Coffee or Shop, and your menu may have no link with that title. You can recognize this cause when the link opens a plain dropdown of its nested links instead of the wide panel.

Upper and lower case and punctuation do not matter, but the words must be the same. Shop all does not match Shop.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.
  3. In the Header section, select the Mega menu block.
  4. In Menu item, enter the title of the link as it is in your menu, such as Shop.
  5. Click Save.

If you rename the link in your menu later, change Menu item to the new title too.

A top-level link without nested links goes straight to its page, and no panel opens. You can recognize this cause when clicking the link in the header opens a page. Add the links you want in the panel under that link, in Content > Menus in your Shopify admin. Set up your store menus shows how to nest links.

The block looks for its link only in the menu chosen in Main menu in the Header section. You can recognize this cause when the link you named is not in the header at all. Select the menu that holds the link under Main menu, or add the link to the menu the header uses.

Translated menu

If your store is in more than one language and you translated your menu, the link's title is different in each language. The block compares Menu item with the title in the visitor's language, so the panel opens in one language and not in another. Translate Menu item to the same words as the link in each language. Translate your store shows where theme text is translated.

Screens narrower than 1000 pixels

The mega menu opens only when the header shows its links in a row, on screens at least 1000 pixels wide. On a phone or a small tablet, Menu in the bar at the bottom of the screen opens the mobile menu, which lists the nested links. With Menu layout set to Product cards, products can show after the links there, one card at a time. This works as designed.
