A product page can suggest products similar to the one on the page, and products that go well with it. Shopify chooses the products, and the theme shows them as product cards.
Where the suggestions come from
Similar products show in the Related products block, and in a section with the source Related to the product. Shopify picks them automatically. You can also choose them yourself in Shopify's Search & Discovery app.
Products that go well together show in the Complementary products block, and in a section with the source Bought with the product. You choose them for each product in Shopify's Search & Discovery app. When a product has none, the Complementary products block shows related products instead.
When Shopify has no products to suggest, the block or section hides together with its heading. That happens in the editor too. A new store, or a section set to Bought with the product on a product with no complementary products chosen yet, can show nothing. Related or complementary products don't show lists the causes.
Add suggestions beside the product
The Related products and Complementary products blocks show in the Product information section, in the column with the product's name and add to cart button. Each is a heading over a row of small cards, with a photo to the left of each product's name and price. The default product page already has the Complementary products block.
At the top of the editor, select Products, then Default product.
In the Product information section, click Add block.
Select Related products or Complementary products.
Optional. Enter a Heading.
Optional. Under Maximum products, choose from 2 to 8 products. The default is 4.
Click Save.
Add a row of suggestions under the product
The Featured collection and Card rail sections can show the same suggestions as a full-width row of cards, with the card settings each section has. The default product page already ends with such a section, set to related products. It is a Featured collection section in the Checkmate style and a Card rail section in the Lair and Fang styles. A style is the starting look you picked when you added the theme, and Theme styles compares them.
At the top of the editor, select Products, then Default product.
Click Add section.
Select Featured collection.
Under Source, select Related to the product or Bought with the product.
Click Save.
For a Card rail section, select Products under Content source first. Source shows after that.
These two sources work only on product pages. On any other page, such as the home page, the section hides on your store. In the editor, it shows a note there instead.
For a product with no complementary products, the default product page shows related products twice, in the Complementary products block and in the section at the bottom. To show them once, choose complementary products for it in Search & Discovery, or remove one of the two.
