Add language and country selectors

The language selector lets customers read your store in another language, and the country and currency selector lets them shop in their own country's currency. Checkmate can show both in the announcement bar and in the footer. The header has no selectors.

A selector shows only when customers have more than one choice in it, even when its setting is on. The language selector needs more than one published language, as Shopify's guide to languages explains. The country and currency selector needs more than one country in your markets, as Shopify's guide to Markets explains.

Both settings are on by default in the announcement bar and the footer, so once your store has a second language or country, the selectors appear without any change in the editor.

Where the selectors show

Place

Where on the page

Announcement bar

At the right end of the bar. On screens narrower than 768 px, at the right end of the bar's second row.

Footer with the Centered layout

At the left end of the top row.

The Fang style has no announcement bar, and its footer starts with both selectors turned off. To show them, turn them on in the Footer section, or add a bar as Add a side menu describes.

Turn a selector on or off

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.

  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.

  3. In the editor sidebar, select Announcement bar under Header, or Footer under Footer.

  4. Turn Language selector on or off.

  6. Click Save.

Checkmate's own text, such as button labels and cart messages, comes translated into 30 languages besides English: Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese. Your products, pages and the text you typed in the editor show in the new language only after you translate them. Translate your store covers the text the theme shows besides your products.
