Add a label such as Best seller to a product

A label puts a short word over the photo on a product card, such as Best seller or Limited. Merchants also call it a badge. Each label comes from a tag on the product, so you add and remove labels in the Shopify admin, not in the editor.

Tag the product

The label is the text after badge: in a product tag. The tag badge:Best seller shows Best seller on the card.

In your Shopify admin, open the product, enter badge:Best seller in Tags, and click Save. Shopify's guide to tags shows how to tag many products at once.

  • Upper and lower case in badge: do not matter. The label keeps the case you type after it.

  • badge: Best seller, with a space after the colon, also shows Best seller.

  • A card shows one label. If a product has two tags that start with badge:, only one of them shows, so give each product one such tag.

Labels show on product cards in the Collection, Search, Featured collection and Card rail sections, and in the Mega menu block of the Header section. The small cards in the cart drawer, in the product page's suggestions and in the header's search panel show no label, and neither do the cards of the Product carousel block. The Spotlight layout of the Featured collection section has no cards, so it shows no label either.

Choose a ribbon or a still label

One theme setting decides how every label in your store looks.

Product tag label

What customers see

Scrolling ribbon

A slanted band in the theme's accent color across the upper part of the photo, with the label repeated along it and moving sideways. For customers whose device is set to reduce motion, the band stands still and shows the label once.

Still label

A small rounded tag in the accent color in the top left corner of the photo.

The Lair style starts with Still label, and the Checkmate and Fang styles with Scrolling ribbon. A style is the starting look you picked when you added the theme. Color settings explains the accent color.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.

  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.

  3. In the editor sidebar, click Theme settings.

  4. Select Product cards.

  5. Under Product tag label, select Scrolling ribbon or Still label.

  6. Click Save.

Product tag label is in the Product cards group of Theme settings, with the other settings for cards.

With Scrolling ribbon, the band crosses the top of the photo, and cards of products without a label tag show none.

Use another prefix

Each section that shows cards has its own Product tag label prefix, set to badge: at first. Change it when your products already carry tags in another pattern, such as label:New.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.

  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.

  3. At the top of the editor, select Collections, then Default collection.

  4. Select the Collection section.

  5. Under Product cards, enter the new prefix in Product tag label prefix, such as label:.

  6. Click Save.

The other sections that show cards have the same setting, and Product card settings in sections lists them. To hide labels in one section, turn off Show product tag label in it.

Sale prices and sold-out products

There is no Sale badge. When a product's compare-at price is higher than its price, the card shows the compare-at price struck through, to the left of the price. If the product's variants have different prices, the card shows From and the lowest price, with no struck-through price. To mark sale products with a word, give them a tag such as badge:Sale.

There is no Sold out label either. When every variant of a product is sold out, the card shows Sold out in place of the price, the photo fades a little, and the card has no add to cart button.
