Show a short description on product cards

Product cards can show a line of smaller, lighter text under the product name, such as a flavor or what the product is for. It lets customers compare products in a grid without opening each one.

Where the words come from

Each card shows the product's Product subtitle metafield. When a product has no subtitle, the card shows the first 20 words of its description, without formatting, and three dots when the description is longer. Either way, the card shows at most three lines and cuts off the rest.

Write a subtitle when the start of your description does not work as a summary, for example when it opens with a story or a list of ingredients.

Write a subtitle for a product

Product subtitle is one of Shopify's standard metafield definitions, with room for up to 70 characters. Add it for products once, as Shopify's guide to standard metafield definitions describes. Then open a product in your Shopify admin, enter one short line in Product subtitle in its Metafields section, and click Save. Shopify's guide to adding values to metafields explains how.

The product page does not show the subtitle. It shows only on cards.

Turn the line on or off

Show short description decides whether cards in a section show the line. It is on at first.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.

  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.

  3. At the top of the editor, select Collections, then Default collection.

  4. Select the Collection section.

  5. Under Product cards, turn on Show short description.

  6. Click Save.

The Search, Featured collection and Card rail sections and the Mega menu block of the Header section have the same setting. In the Featured collection section, it also controls the line under each product name in the Spotlight layout.

Some cards have no setting. Cards in the Hotspots section and in the header's search panel always show the line. The small cards in the cart drawer and in the product page's suggestions never show it, and neither do the cards of the Product carousel block.
