Search settings

Search settings choose what the header's search shows while a customer types, before they press Enter. In the editor sidebar, click Theme settings, then select Search.

The search itself, whether it opens as a panel under the header or as a drawer, and the shortcuts it shows before anyone types are set in the Header section. The page of full results is the Search section.

What it does

Show results while typing

Shows results as soon as the customer has typed 2 characters, and updates them as they type. Products always show. On by default. When it is off, the search shows nothing new while the customer types, and pressing Enter opens the search results page.

Include suggested searches

Shows the rest of the first suggested search in the field, after what the customer typed. The right arrow key fills it in. When nothing matches, the suggested searches show as links under the No results found message.

Include collections

Shows up to 4 matching collections, each with its image when it has one.

Include blog posts

Shows up to 4 matching blog posts.

Include pages

Shows up to 4 matching pages, such as an About page.

The four settings under Show results while typing show only when it is on, and all four are on by default.

What customers see

Results replace the shortcuts the search shows before anyone types, such as the Quick search tag blocks from the Header section. They come in this order:

  1. Collections, blog posts and pages together, in one row. Each one is a tile labeled Collection, Article or Page.

  2. Up to 10 products, as product cards in a grid under the heading Products and the number found, with a View all results link that opens the search results page.

When nothing matches, the search says No results found for, followed by what the customer typed, and the shortcuts stay under it. Shopify decides which products and pages match. The product cards follow your Product card settings.

To show your own search shortcuts before anyone types, see Set up search suggestions.
