Sell subscriptions

Customers choose a subscription on the product page, from a row of buttons above the add to cart button. A subscriptions app creates the plans, and the theme's Purchase options block shows them.

You need a subscriptions app, such as Shopify Subscriptions, that offers plans for the product. Shopify's guide to subscriptions describes how to set them up.

What customers see

The block shows the heading Purchase options over one button per plan, named as the app names it, such as Delivery every 2 weeks. A One-time purchase button comes first, unless the product is sold only by subscription.

  • The page opens with One-time purchase selected. A product sold only by subscription opens with its first plan selected.
  • The price under the product's title changes to the price of the plan the customer selects.
  • A plan that the app does not offer for the selected variant is hidden until the customer selects a variant it covers.

On a product without plans, the block shows nothing, so it can stay on a template that every product uses.

Add the Purchase options block

The default product page of the Checkmate style already has this block, above Buy buttons. The Lair and Fang styles do not. A style is the starting look you picked when you added the theme.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.
  3. At the top of the editor, select Products, then Default product.
  4. In the Product information section, click Add block.
  5. Select Purchase options.
  6. Drag the block to just before Buy buttons in the list of blocks.
  7. Optional. Turn off Show label to hide the Purchase options heading over the buttons.
  8. Click Save.

Subscriptions on product cards

A product sold only by subscription never goes into the cart straight from a product card. Its plus button opens quick view, where the customer picks a plan, because the quick view popup has its own Purchase options block. A product that also sells as a one-time purchase can still go into the cart in one click, as a one-time purchase. Let customers add to cart from product cards explains both buttons.
