How each product gets its own content

A product template is the layout you build in the editor under Products, and every product that uses it shares that layout. The sections in that layout decide what changes from one product to the next. Some sections read the product's own metafields, which are extra fields you add to products in your Shopify admin, such as an altitude, a list of questions or a rating. Every other section shows what you entered in the editor, on every product page.

Sections that read the product's data

A section reads a product's data in one of three ways. You connect a setting to a metafield with the editor's Connect dynamic source icon, you type a metafield's namespace and key into a setting, such as custom.body, or you name a metafield that holds a list of entries. Each entry is a metaobject, a small record with its own fields, such as a question and its answer.

Product cards read metafields too. The Score seal metafield and Metrics settings in the Collection, Search, Featured collection and Card rail sections, and in the header's Mega menu block, show a value from each product on its card.

Everything else on a product page is the same for every product. That includes headings, paragraphs, videos and photos you chose in the editor, the Statistic blocks in Testimonials, and the questions you added as Question blocks in FAQ. Use a different layout for some products explains how to give a group of products its own template.

What a new install starts with

The default product template comes connected to the metafields of its style's demo products. A style is the starting look you picked when you added the theme, and Theme styles compares them. In the Checkmate style, the template connects:

  • each Facts figure and each Specifications row to a custom metafield, such as custom.altitude_m or custom.region

  • Marquee to custom.tasting_notes

  • Highlights, FAQ and Testimonials to custom.highlights, custom.faq and custom.reviews

  • the Product metrics block to custom.body and custom.acidity

  • the cards in the related products section to a score seal from custom.q_grade and metrics from custom.body and custom.acidity

The Lair and Fang styles connect the same kinds of sections to their own keys, such as custom.heat in Fang.

The connections point at metafields your store may not have. For each one you keep, create a metafield definition with the same namespace and key in your Shopify admin, and enter its value on each product. Or connect the setting to a metafield you already have. Until a product has a value, the figure, row or section is hidden on its page, as the table above describes.
