Ask customers to agree to terms before checkout

A terms checkbox in the cart makes customers agree to your terms before they can check out. Until a customer ticks it, the Check Out button is grayed out and can't be clicked, and accelerated checkout buttons such as Shop Pay or Apple Pay are hidden. The label can link to your terms of service.

Before you start

  • Optional. Your terms of service are set up in Settings > Policies in your Shopify admin, so the label has a page to link to. Shopify's guide to store policies explains how.

Turn on the checkbox

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.

  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.

  3. In the editor sidebar, click Theme settings.

  4. Select Cart.

  5. Under Terms checkbox, turn on Require terms agreement. Terms label appears under it.

  6. In Terms label, enter the sentence customers agree to, such as I agree to the terms of service. Leave it as it is to keep "I agree to the terms and conditions".

  7. Optional. To link words in the label to your policy, select them in Terms label, click the link icon, and enter the page's address, such as /policies/terms-of-service.

  8. Click Save.

What customers see

The checkbox shows in the cart drawer and on the cart page, in the order summary, under the subtotal and just before the checkout button. When the customer ticks it, the Check Out button and the accelerated checkout buttons become available.

The tick is saved with the cart, so the box stays ticked when the customer comes back to the cart.

Checkout buttons outside the cart

The checkbox is in the cart only. Accelerated checkout buttons on product pages, in quick view and in the Featured product section take customers straight to checkout, so they never see it. Quick view is the window that opens from the eye button on a product card.

If every order must carry the agreement, turn off Show dynamic checkout buttons in these places:

  • The Buy buttons block of the Product information section, in each product template. Quick view has its own template, quick-view, under Products at the top of the editor.

  • The Buy buttons block of each Featured product section.
