Install a theme on your store

Checkout Beast themes come from the Shopify Theme Store. You can install a theme on your store, which Shopify calls adding a theme, and change it in the editor before you pay. Customers see it only after you buy it and publish it.

Stores on the Starter plan can only use Shopify's Spotlight theme, so your store needs another plan. To buy the theme, your staff account needs the Themes, Manage and install apps and channels and Approve app charges permissions.

Try the theme

A trial installs the theme on your store as a draft, so customers keep seeing your current theme.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. Click Add themes.
  3. Select Visit Theme Store.
  4. In the Theme Store, search for the theme's name.
  5. Open the theme's page.
  6. Click Try theme.

The theme appears in your admin under Draft themes, with a Theme trial label. Next to it, click Edit theme to open it in the editor.

A trial has these limits:

  • You can change the theme's settings, sections and content in the editor, and those changes stay when you buy the theme.
  • You can't edit the theme's code.
  • You can't publish the theme until you buy it.
  • You can try up to 19 paid themes at the same time.

Your store starts without the demo store's products, photos and logo. Products, collections, menus, pages and blog posts live in your Shopify admin, apart from the theme, so you add your own.

Buy the theme

Theme purchases are final sale, and the theme is licensed to the store you buy it for. Your theme license has the details.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. In Draft themes, next to the theme, click Buy.
  3. Approve the charge on the screens Shopify shows next.

Publish the theme

Publishing makes the theme the one every customer sees. Your previous theme moves to Draft themes, so you can publish it again later.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
  2. In Draft themes, next to the theme, click Publish.

Shopify's guide to publishing themes also covers publishing from the editor and from the Shopify app.

Themes in your Draft themes list

Every theme you install, copy or update shows under Draft themes until you publish it. Only one theme is published at a time. Stores on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans can keep up to 20 themes, and Shopify Plus stores up to 100. When you reach the limit, remove a theme before you install another.

When a new version of the theme is out, Update your theme to a new version explains how to install it.
