Your theme license

You buy your theme through the Shopify Theme Store, and Shopify sets the license terms. Each term below links to the Shopify Help page that states it.

One store per purchase

A theme bought from the Theme Store is licensed to the store you bought it for, and to that store only. Shopify's guide to buying themes has the details.

A theme used on a store that has no license for it shows "Action required: licensing issue" under it in the admin. You can't customize or publish it until you resolve the licensing issue, and it gets no support or updates. Shopify's page on unlicensed themes lists what to do.

Use the theme on another store

To use the theme on a second store, buy it again for that store. On Shopify Plus too, each storefront that uses the theme needs its own license, and one license can't be shared between stores. Shopify's licensing guide covers Plus stores.

Move the theme to a new store

You can move a theme you bought to another store when all of these are true:

  • Both stores have the same account owner email.
  • You are the registered owner of both stores.
  • You are closing the store you bought the theme for. A store closed this way can't be reopened.

The move works this way: you download the theme file from the old store, remove the theme and its copies from it, close it, upload the file to the new store, and buy the theme again there. You can then ask Shopify Support for a refund of the first purchase. The move takes the theme file only, not your products, collections, menus, pages or blog posts. Shopify's guide to transferring a theme has each step.

Refunds

Theme purchases from the Theme Store are final sale, and the theme developer can't give refunds. The one exception is a move between two stores you own, described above, which Shopify Support handles. The refund is the price you first paid, even if the theme costs more now. Shopify's refund policy states the terms.

Try the theme before you buy

You can try a paid theme before you buy it by previewing it in your Shopify admin. While the theme is on trial, it shows a Theme trial label, and you can't edit its code. You can try up to 19 paid themes at the same time. Shopify's guide to trying themes has the steps.
