Filters don't show on my collection page

Checkmate shows the filters you create in Shopify's Search & Discovery app on collection pages and on the search results page. They sit in a panel that opens from the filter icon, not in a column beside the products. Sections that show products on other pages, such as Featured collection and Card rail, have no filters.

Rule out the cache and the wrong theme

If your other recent changes don't show on your store either, start with My changes don't show on my store. Which filters exist, and which values they list, is up to Shopify and the Search & Discovery app. What the theme controls and what Shopify controls explains the difference.

Filters behind the filter icon

Above the products, to the left of the sort menu, a button with three lines, each shorter than the one above, opens the filters. On screens 1000 pixels wide or wider, the panel slides in from the left side of the screen. On smaller screens it rises from the bottom. When a filter is in use, a small number on the icon shows how many. In the panel, each filter is a list of values with checkboxes, and the price filter is two boxes, From and To.

You can recognize this cause when the icon is there and clicking it shows your filters. Nothing needs fixing.

No filters in Search & Discovery

The theme shows only the filters that Shopify sends for the page. If none are set up, the filter icon does not show. You can recognize this cause in the Search & Discovery app, where the list of filters is empty. Create the filters there, as described in Shopify's guide to filters. Add filters to collection and search pages walks through the whole set-up.

Filtering turned off in the section

You can recognize this cause in the editor: Enable filtering is off in the Collection section.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.

  2. Next to Checkmate, click Edit theme.

  3. At the top of the editor, select Collections, then Default collection.

  4. In the Collection section, turn on Enable filtering.

  5. Click Save.

For the search results page, select Search at the top of the editor in step 3, and turn on Enable filtering in the Search section. On the search page, the filter icon shows only when the search finds products.

Collection on the landing template

Checkmate has a second collection template, landing, for collections that should show without filters. Its Collection section has Enable filtering turned off. You can recognize this cause when filters show on most collections but not on one, and that collection's Theme template in your Shopify admin is landing.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click the collection.

  3. Under Theme template, select Default collection.

  4. Click Save.

The Theme template list on the collection's page offers both templates, Default collection and landing.

On the landing template, the bar above the products holds only the sort menu and the product count, with no filter icon.

Show a collection without filters explains what the landing template is for.

Collection with more than 5,000 products

Shopify sends no filters for a collection with more than 5,000 products, or for a search with more than 100,000 results. You can recognize this cause from the product count that Checkmate shows above the products. Split the products into smaller collections. Shopify's guide to filters lists the other limits.

Products without values for the filter

A filter lists only the values that apply to the products on the page. You can recognize this cause when a filter shows its values on one collection and few or none on another, such as a color filter on a collection where no product has a color. Check that the products in the collection have the option, tag or metafield the filter uses.
